PAEKĀKĀRIKI
Rail Stronghold
Friday, December 14, St Peter’s Village Hall. Doors 7:15, Show at 8pm
Return travel possible from Wellington, Waikanae or stops in between on the KPL line.
The show is timed to allow same night, return travel, by Metlink's public transport rail system. This journey travels along the Kapiti Line (KPL), which offers stunning views of Porirua harbour and Kapiti Island. Electrified more than 60 years before Auckland’s system, Wellington has best-used rail network per capita, and it’s a system that survived the darkest days of rail in the best shape. Nowhere is Wellington’s love of rail better shown off than the magnificent former refreshment rooms at Paekakariki Station - saved from demolition and restored by locals.
Metlink offers late night trains on Friday nights, though note that the frequency is hourly by the end of the night.
Itinerary ex Wellington or Waikanae
If coming from Wellington, take the KPL service leaving Wellington Station at 6:41pm or earlier, which arrives at 7.36.
If coming from Waikanae, take the 7:00pm service or earlier, which arrives at 7.20. You can plan your journey based on your nearest station at Metlink.
Doors to the hall will open at 7:15 (to accommodate early arrivals), and the show will start at 8:00
The show will finish by 10:00 to allow time to catch the 10.12 train south or the 10.24 North. There are later services, too, but note if you’re going south, these are hourly.
This journey is most affordable if you buy Metlink 10-trip tickets. If you use the above times, you can also use off-peak 10 trip tickets, which means your trip could cost as little at $6.20 each way from Wellington. Cash is also accepted on board Metlink Trains, but no EFTPOS.
